Meet Mrs. Bevel

My name is Jean Bevel, and I love my job. I come from a family of educators, school employees, and life long learners.  My mom taught elementary school for 20+ years, my grandmother was a school secretary, and aunt has held many positions such as speech and language pathologist, principal, and director of special education.  When I was a little girl I used to play school with all of my grandma's cosmetics that were lined up on her dresser. Jean Nate was always in trouble!

I attended Humboldt State University and graduated with my BA in Art with a double concentration in Art Education and Art History in 2002.

I started teaching in 2003 for Palm Springs Unified School district at James Workman Middle School as a 6-8 ELA and Social Studies teacher for students with mild to moderate disabilites.  I worked as an intern and earned my Education Specialist Credential in Mild to Moderate disabilities in 2003 from California State University San Bernardino, where I consequently earned my Masters degree in Special Education.

In 2008 I decided I wanted to teach little people and took a resource specialist position with Morongo Unified School District at Joshua Tree Elementary.  I taught there for the next 5 years in a position that was both special education and early intervention, specializing in reading.   My work as a reading prevention teacher helped my complete my National Board Certification in Early Childhood Literacy.  My passion for teaching students to read eventually lead me to earn my Dyslexia Practitioner certification from Wilson Academy in 2017, as well as a Dyslexia Credential from the International Dyslexia Association.

In 2013, my husband and I decided we were ready for another adventure and moved to Grass Valley, where I found a home at Cottage Hill.  We love it here!

When I'm not in the classroom, I'm either in my garden or in my art studio or kitchen making something (usually a mess).  I have four dogs, four goats, and a passel of chickens and ducks, and I couldn't be happier to be your teacher!
