"Ahoy mateys!  The PTC has begun collecting Jog-A-Thon pledge money from the teachers today.  Collection will continue through the day of the event, however, to earn yer prizes please turn in ye money by Wednesday Sept. 20th.  Tuesday, Sept. 19th is "International Talk Like a Pirate Day," so best ye brush up on yer pirate speak."

Jogathon Online Donations

New on our website!  You can now make your Jogathon donations via Pay Pal on the Cottage Hill website.  Once you are in Pay Pal, please note your child's name, teacher, and add JAT (Jogathon) in the Special Instructions to Seller box so we can be sure to attribute you donation to the correct class/student.  Thank you for participating in this important fund raising event!

Itching to get your hands on the new spirit T-shirt?  PTC will have a table set up in the quad this Thursday at "Back to School Night" from 6-8pm.  We will have student shirts on hand, they cost $10 each.  We will have order forms available for adult sizes (v-neck and crew available), they cost $12 each.  We will also be selling surplus yearbooks from the 2016-2017 school year.  So if you found yourself wishing you would have bought one, come by the table; $20 for soft-sided and $25 for hard cover. Please bring cash or a check made out to "Cottage Hill PTC."

Odyssey of the Mind (ASP)

Pleasant Ridge Union School District offers Odyssey Of The Mind (formerly know as Advanced Studies Program- ASP) for students in 4th-8th grades.  The program’s focus is on participation in creative problem-solving that results in a competition that is widely recognized for meeting Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM); Common Core; and 21st Century learning objectives.

Divided into teams of 5-7 students, children have the opportunity to solve one of five complex open-ended problems using creative thinking strategies.  The student-driven solution process takes months of brainstorming, creating, designing and building. At the 4th and 5th Grade level, this culminates in an Odyssey of the Mind Performance Night where teams present their main problem’s solution.

In the Odyssey Of The Mind program, students harness their own abilities, knowledge and interests while developing skill sets that will help them succeed in life, such as collaborative problem-solving, leadership, work ethic, perseverance, public speaking, creative thinking, designing to requirements, working within deadlines, working within budget constraints, conflict resolution, interpersonal communication, social interaction, and project management. Each student experiences success through active participation in the free-thinking process.  Parents also have a unique opportunity to share in the rewarding experience with their children by contributing to the program in various ways.

To participate in the Odyssey Of The Mind, students must undergo a rigorous selection process.  Students are initially considered based on standardized criteria, but students can also be evaluated based on a teacher recommendation or upon request of the student or parent.  An important consideration for both student and parent is the time commitment of participation; as in other competitive team activities, each program member deserves fully engaged teammates. The Odyssey of the Mind program happens on Wednesdays from November-March at Magnolia. Alta Sierra students ride the bus down leaving at 1:50. Cottage Hill students will be walked over to Magnolia. Then all students can either be picked up at Magnolia at 3:15 or can ride the Magnolia bus home.

The PRUSD Odyssey Of The Mind program offers a learning environment like no other.  Students are encouraged to not only think “outside the box”, but also to investigate ways to creatively use “the box” to solve a problem.  Why not use the box to build a 3-D rendition of a Picasso cubist masterpiece?  Or incorporate the box into a machine that pulls a rabbit out of a hat?  Or cut up the box and use the pieces to create something completely unique?  The possibilities are endless!

If you would like more information about Odyssey Of The Mind opportunities, please contact the PRUSD Odyssey of the Mind Director at [email protected].  Additional Odyssey of the Mind information can be found at www.odysseyofthemind.com.

Have a great weekend!

The Farm Cart

Have you visited the Cottage Hill Farm Cart yet?  This is our "mobile farmer's market", offering fresh and locally grown fruits and vegetables for a small donation.  The cart will be outside the front of school most days, for as long as there is produce available.  All donations go to support the Cottage Hill garden.

Ice Cream Social!

Class lists will be posted on Monday at 4:00 and PTC will be holding an Ice Cream Social that night as well!

PTC Volunteers will be there that night to answer any questions about how the PTC serves our students.  If you are interested in joining PTC, we would love to have you!!  The first meeting is Wednesday, August 16th @ 12:30 in room 17.

Last year our PTC raised enough money through Jogathon to purchase picnic tables for our courtyard and Chrome Books for the classrooms.  We are looking forward to another great Jogthon; this year we are focusing our fundraising efforts on Chrome Books, a goal I know both teachers and students are in favor of!

So you can plan ahead...

Although you can sign up for after school care on the first day of school ("Big Rec" and "Little Rec"), you can save yourself a long wait in line by coming in to the office NOW to fill out your contract and make payment.  Both Rec programs are available on the first day of school to those who have signed up.

Kindergarten students may also be signed up for Little Rec for the first two and a half weeks of school, when Kindergarten dismisses at 11:30.

Lunch price for this year is $4.00.  You can go onto Mealtime (on our website) and create a lunch account for each of your children.  This allows you to put money on the account remotely and saves having to come up with cash each day!

The office is open daily from 8:00-4:00 to help you!
